Did Lucia visit you this morning?

When I was a child, Lucia came to visit me every year. Or rather, Lucia came to visit our family, not just to me.

For a long time I thought that it was like that for everyone, that Lucia and her procession of light bearers came to every child’s home. But of course, that was not the case.

Both my parents worked as teachers, that’s why our very own Lucia procession came to our home. It was a tradition among students at the school to do this for their teachers.

That reminds me of how easy it is to think that what applies to me also applies to everyone else. If something happens to me, shouldn’t it also happen to everyone? If something is true for me, shouldn’t it also be true for everyone else?

As a priest, I need to remember that it is not so. What I think is ”true” and universal might be true for me only, not for anyone else. Therefore, when I talk, especially when I talk about God, I need to find out how you think, so that what I say also works for you.

Maybe you also need to be aware of this, when you talk to people?
